Family Environmental supported DRC Group (DRC) in their efforts to expedite the removal of all asbestos contaminated tornado debris from the City of Joplin, Missouri after the May 22, 2011 EF5 Tornado that devastated the City of Joplin.  Family Environmental, a subcontractor to DRC, worked in conjunction with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to establish protocols and procedures to be utilized during the cleanup of this asbestos contaminated tornado debris. 

USACE divided the damage path of the tornado into seven zones encompassing the City.  Cleanup work was then delegated by zone.  DRC tasked Family Environmental with daily OSHA air sampling and ambient area air sampling via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to protect the public health and environmental during the cleanup efforts.  The air sampling data was supplied to DRC daily and they forwarded onto City officials to post on the City website to advise citizens, cleanup volunteers and all others working in the disaster area of the airborne asbestos concentrations.  No significant elevated concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers were detected during the cleanup effort.  All tornado debris was significantly wetted prior to disturbance and loaded into haul trucks dedicated for landfill transportation. The cleanup effort ran nonstop from sunup to sundown, seven days a week until the cleanup was completed.
